ProjectRITUALS OF TRAINING
Menu

In collaboration with 3:e Våningen, NSFW proudly presents Rituals of Training by Louise Enhörning.

In 2021, Louise Enhörning began a multi-year project documenting the experiences of three young female racing drivers at the very outset of their youth. In a domain where women have historically been marginalized both visually and institutionally, Enhörning turns her lens toward subjectivity, examining aspirations, ritualized training, and the determination that propels these athletes forward.

Through a rigorous, relational methodology, she constructs a  sophisticated and multifaceted portrait of young women navigating a high-performance, technologically regulated, and deeply gendered environment—where the paramount ambition is to become the first female driver to win a Formula 1 race.

Enhörning’s practice is firmly situated within a postmodern framework, where autobiographical material, speculative fiction, and documentary strategies converge into a polyphonic articulation.By investigating the spaces and environments left in the wake of her subjects, she animates what remains unspoken—a silent presence that lingers. Her work illuminates those aspects often overlooked, unvoiced, or not yet fully articulated. Through nuanced subtle visual elements and symbolic signifiers, the project invites reflection on temporality, aspiration, and the liminal states experienced between training sessions.

The exhibition at 3:e Våningen includes installation, photography, and sculpture. Several of the photographs were produced using self-constructed filters, engendering a visual experience that evokes the interior perspective of a racing car—where life appears as a continuous stream rushing past. Collectively, the works interrogate concepts of time and space, utilizing photography to engage with philosophical inquiries concerning reality, dreams, and the gendered conditions shaping the prospects of young women in contemporary society.

Works from this project were previously presented in 2024 at Södertälje Konsthall and the esteemed photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles.

They now return to 3:e Våningen under the title Rituals of Training.

In this renewed context, the exhibition includes new works that deepen and recontextualize the project’s central themes, as Enhörning explores the delicate threshold between childhood and adulthood—an ephemeral phase of life that can never be preserved.
